Passing of Charles “Chuck” Chaney

It is with deep sympathy that the Deale Volunteer Fire Department announces the death of Charles “Chuck” Chaney on October 28, 2024. He will be greatly missed and our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Chaney family during this time. From the Kent County Office of Emergency Services The Kent County Office of Emergency Services has suffered a great loss. It is with a heavy heart that the Kent OES EMS Division announces the death and passing of Past EMS Lieutenant Charles “Chuck” Chaney, husband of current Kent OES Paramedic Kimberly Chaney. This is a substantial loss for the Kent County Office of Emergency Services, Kent County Government, and the Kent County Community. Chuck served as a pertinent puzzle piece of the EMS division serving the residents and visitors of Kent County with dedication of service, empathy, and pride from May 2nd, 2005, until March 29th, 2020. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences Kim and her loved ones during this tragic time. Passing of Betty Norfolk

It is with deep sympathy that the Deale Volunteer Fire Department announces the death of Elizabeth “Betty” Catterton Norfolk on March 16, 2024. She will be greatly missed and our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Norfolk family during this time. Elizabeth (Betty) Catterton Norfolk passed away March 16, 2024 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was born June 8, 1935, in Greenock, MD to Robert Francis and Elizabeth Nutwell Catterton. Betty graduated from Southern High School in 1953. She married Kenneth Norfolk on August 4, 1956. They built a home and raised their family in Tracy’s Landing, MD. Betty worked at the Deale Public Library. She was a lifetime member of the Deale VFD Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of Oakland United Methodist Church until its closing and then she attended St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She was the caregiver for her grandmother and her aunt and uncles. Betty was a great source of advice and comfort to her large extended family. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Kenny. Passing of Joseph Frank Miller

It is with deep sympathy that the Deale Volunteer Fire Department announces the death of Joseph Frank Miller, Sr. on March 12, 2024. He will be greatly missed and our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Miller family during this time. Joseph Frank Miller, Sr.,85, of Tracy’s Landing passed away March 12, 2024, at his home. He was born September 9, 1938, in Churchton to Frank Joseph and Florence Josephine (Owen) Miller. Joe was raised in Churchton and graduated from Southern High School in 1956. He married Nancy Dorsey on May 2, 1969, and they made their home in Tracy’s Landing. Joe owned and operated Millers Garage in Churchton for many years, retiring in 2014. He was a life member of Deale Volunteer Fire Department where he served as Past President. Joe loved racing and working on cars, cutting his grass, spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren. Passing of John Tillison Moreland, Jr.

It is with deep sympathy that the Deale Volunteer Fire Department announces the death of John Tillison Moreland on November 14, 2023. He will be greatly missed and our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Moreland family during this time. John Tillison Moreland, Jr, 71, of Deale passed away November 14, 2023. He was born December 31, 1951 to Winifred (Childs) and John T Moreland, Sr. in Cheverly, MD. He graduated from Southern High School. In 1970 he married Gayle Phipps and they made their home in Deale. John worked in construction as a heavy equipment operator and retired from Anne Arundel County. He was a life member of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department, a member of the American Legion Post 226, Mayo, and Faith Assembly of God, Lothian. In his younger years he played softball for various south county teams and flag football for numerous teams. For many years John enjoyed portraying Santa Clause at various events around south county.John is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gayle Phipps Moreland, his son John T. Passing of James Vernon Hardesty

It is with deep sympathy that the Deale Volunteer Fire Department announces the death of James Vernon Hardesty on February 3, 2023. He will be greatly missed and our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Hardesty family during this time. James Vernon Hardesty passed away on February 3, 2023 at the age of 81 with his family at his bedside. Vernon was born on November 22, 1941 at the family home to Robert and Ruth (Ireland) Hardesty. Vernon was a member of the National Guard Army. Vernon was a long-time member of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department where he was Chief, he also did several other roles over the years. Vernon was employed by the Anne County Fire Department. He retired in 1988. He was also an electrician for over 50 years. He was an avid reader and had several racehorses over the years. Vernon enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Passing of Richard Chester

It is with deep sympathy that the Deale Volunteer Fire Department announces the death of Richard Chester on March 25, 2021. He will be greatly missed and our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Chester family during this time. Richard Chester, 64, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2021 at his residence. He was born November 19, 1956 in Alexandria, VA, a son of the late Thomas and Betty Malloy Chester. Richard was a fireman in Maryland for over twenty years working with Kentland Fire Departments #33 and #46 and Deale Fire Department #42. Mr. Chester is survived by his children, Sandra Lopes, Heather Swanson and Anthony Davis Chester; friend, Ashley Collins; four grandchildren, along with many other family and friends who will miss him. Passing of Ladies Auxiliary Member Martha Gibson

The Deale VFD & RS and Ladies Auxiliary is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Life Member Martha Gibson . Martha Gibson was a life member of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.   Martha Elizabeth Gibson, 92, of Tracy’s Landing passed away on March 22, 2021 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was born in Friendship, MD on August 23, 1928 to parents William Riley and Sadie Elizabeth Tucker. Martha attended Tracy’s Elementary School and graduated from Southern High School in Lothian, MD in 1946. She married Samuel Gibson, Sr. on February 27, 1948. She retired from the Prince George’s County Board of Education in 1991 after 36 years of service as administrative secretary to four superintendents. Martha was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church where she served as Treasurer of the Martha Lydia Women’s Circle for 20 years. In her younger years, she was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary Deale Volunteer Fire Department, the South County Democratic Club and the Landing Garden Club. Russ graduated from Beall High School in 1972 and soon after began computer training at the Computer Learning Center in Virginia. Following his training, Russ spent the next several decades as a government contractor for NOAA working as a systems administrator.
