Passing of James Vernon Hardesty

It is with deep sympathy that the Deale Volunteer Fire Department announces the death of James Vernon Hardesty on February 3, 2023. He will be greatly missed and our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Hardesty family during this time. James Vernon Hardesty passed away on February 3, 2023 at the age of 81 with his family at his bedside. Vernon was born on November 22, 1941 at the family home to Robert and Ruth (Ireland) Hardesty. Vernon was a member of the National Guard Army. Vernon was a long-time member of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department where he was Chief, he also did several other roles over the years. Vernon was employed by the Anne County Fire Department. He retired in 1988. He was also an electrician for over 50 years. He was an avid reader and had several racehorses over the years. Vernon enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, brother Robert O Hardesty (Martha), sister Delois Chaney Cullember (Charles Chaney and Jerry Cullember). Passing of Richard Chester

It is with deep sympathy that the Deale Volunteer Fire Department announces the death of Richard Chester on March 25, 2021. He will be greatly missed and our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Chester family during this time. Richard Chester, 64, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2021 at his residence. He was born November 19, 1956 in Alexandria, VA, a son of the late Thomas and Betty Malloy Chester. Richard was a fireman in Maryland for over twenty years working with Kentland Fire Departments #33 and #46 and Deale Fire Department #42. Mr. Chester is survived by his children, Sandra Lopes, Heather Swanson and Anthony Davis Chester; friend, Ashley Collins; four grandchildren, along with many other family and friends who will miss him. Passing of Ladies Auxiliary Member Martha Gibson

The Deale VFD & RS and Ladies Auxiliary is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Life Member Martha Gibson . Martha Gibson was a life member of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.   Martha Elizabeth Gibson, 92, of Tracy’s Landing passed away on March 22, 2021 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. She was born in Friendship, MD on August 23, 1928 to parents William Riley and Sadie Elizabeth Tucker. Martha attended Tracy’s Elementary School and graduated from Southern High School in Lothian, MD in 1946. She married Samuel Gibson, Sr. on February 27, 1948. She retired from the Prince George’s County Board of Education in 1991 after 36 years of service as administrative secretary to four superintendents. Martha was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church where she served as Treasurer of the Martha Lydia Women’s Circle for 20 years. In her younger years, she was an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary Deale Volunteer Fire Department, the South County Democratic Club and the Landing Garden Club. Passing of Life Member – Russell Lancaster II

Celebrating the wonderful life of Russell Andrew Lancaster II – August 22, 2020 from 1PM-5PM with Services to begin at 2PM at the Deale Volunteer Fire Department. It is with deep sympathy that the Deale Volunteer Fire Department announces the death of Russell Lancaster Jr. on August 2, 2020. Russ was a Life Member of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department and past Chief. He will be greatly missed and our continued thoughts and prayers go out to the Lancaster family during this time. DOB – 7/4/1954 DOD – 8/2/2020 Date of Membership – 2/3/1987 Badge # – 500487 Russell Andrew “Russ” Lancaster II, 66, of Socastee, SC, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2020, from complications of COVID. Born July 4, 1954, in Frostburg, MD he was the son of Emory and Doris (Nicol) Lancaster. Russ graduated from Beall High School in 1972 and soon after began computer training at the Computer Learning Center in Virginia. Following his training, Russ spent the next several decades as a government contractor for NOAA working as a systems administrator. The Deale VFD & RS and Ladies Auxiliary is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Life Member Jill Mckenzie. Jill McKenzie was an active and life member of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary. Jill was active in the Ladies Auxiliary to the Anne Arundel County Volunteer Firemen’s Association Ladies Auxiliary.  She served as President from 1977-1978.  She was inducted in the Hall of Fame in 2003. ...

Passing of Life Member – Leonard King

The Deale VFD&RS is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Life Member Leonard King,r S.. Leonard King served the Deale Volunteer Fire Department for 32 years, holding positions as Treasurer, President and Lieutenant. Mr. Leonard T. King, Sr., of Deale, Maryland, and formerly of Damascus, Maryland, died Thursday, February 1, at the Anne Arundel Medical Center, Annapolis, Maryland, with friends and family by his side. Born April 21, 1942, in Clarksburg, Maryland, he was the son of the late Kenneth and Olivia King. He is survived by three children, Lisa Lewis, of Charlestown, West Virginia, Kelly King of Deale, Maryland, and Leonard T. King, Jr., of Frederick, Maryland, 4 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. Upon graduation from Damascus High School, he attended the University of Maryland in their fire engineering curriculum before taking a job as a Fire Prevention Officer with Montgomery County, Maryland. He received his Associate of Arts Degree in Fire Science from Montgomery College. He was the President of the Maryland State Firemen’s Association (1985-1986), President of the Maryland Fire Chiefs Association (1990-1991) and served on the Board of Directors for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (2003-2015). Passing of Charter Member Bernard Calvin Phipps

It is with deepest regrets that the Officers and the Members of the Deale Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad announce the passing of Mr. Bernard Calvin Phipps. Bernard Calvin Phipps, a lifelong resident of Deale, passed away July 2, 2016 surrounded by his family. The only child of Bernard Lucius “Bud” and Lena Phipps was born September 20, 1924 at the Phipps Family Homestead. He attended Deale School and Southern High School. Calvin served in the United States Marine Corps and was a combat veteran of WWII in the Pacific Theater. He married his high school sweetheart, Lorraine Nutwell Marshall in 1946 and they were married for over 50 years. Calvin spent many years working as a waterman, proprietor of Phipps Marine Railway and as a Marine Surveyor. He and his wife also owned Phipps LTD Antiques. He was a faithful member of Faith Assembly of God, previously Deale Assembly of God for more than 60 years where he served on the Board of Directors, as Sunday School Superintendent and Youth Leader.
